Use Backup Power Safely

Portable generators are incredibly useful but can be deadly if misused. NEVER operate a generator inside your home, garage, or basement. They produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless gas that kills within minutes.

Place generators at least 20 feet away from your home, downwind from windows and doors. Always have working CO detectors in your home.

Do not plug a generator directly into your wall outlet (backfeeding). This poses serious electrocution risks to utility workers trying to restore power. Connect appliances directly to the generator using heavy-duty extension cords.
